Big Idea
Digitised Manuscripts to Europeana project (DM2E): Progress on new technology for the Linked Open Data environment, presentation by Ido Ivri, National Library of Israel, Jerusalem

The aims of this project are to enable as many content providers as possible to integrate their content into Europeana. Since collection holders make their cataloguing data available in a variety of formats, a tool will be developed that converts metadata from a diverse range of formats to the Europeana Data Model (EDM).

The project will also develop open-source tools for use in humanities research that will help scholars to make use of the potential of the Linked Data web to revolutionize textual scholarship. Work is in progress on the prototypes of two such tools developed by Net7:

Korbo is an aggregation platform for gathering Linked Data objects relevant to one’s area of research into single workspaces or ‘baskets’.

Pundit: creating semantically structured data while annotating web pages.

Pundit is a powerful, but easy to use, semantic annotation tool that enables researchers to link sections of text to each other or to other Linked Data resources on the net such as DBPedia, Freebase and Geonames in a structured way. DM2E tools will enable scholars to connect and contextualise texts in new and exciting ways. Try Pundit demo live here. To learn how to annotate websites with this tool a short guide to Pundit is available here.
